Although we do not have any documents as such pertaining to the service of William Greene, there is information to be collated from various sources in our archives, which are fragmentary, enabling me to put together a reasonable account of his military career.
William Greene first appears in our records in the Monthly Army List of November 1800, where he is shown as the most junior Lieutenant in the 82nd (Prince of Wales’s Volunteers) Regiment of Foot. I have not been able to trace any earlier service than this for him.4 
Anecdote*1806 A presentation sword was presented to Capt. William Greene by his brother HJ Greene in 1806.
This sword is made from the Damascus steel blade of Yatahan short sword, heavy silver guard and elk antler grip with silver end cap. The scabbard is from a cut down 1796 straight bladed cavalry sword.
The top part is engraved with "Presented to Captain Wm Greene by his affectionate brother H J Greene - 1806".5

Milit-record10 November 1813 He fought at the Battle of the Nivelle; "Although the early winter rains are beginning to make life decidedly uncomfortable the CIC has his army moving up to the next river obstacle, the Nive, a month has passed and the rivers are running full when on 9th December they get the order to cross to the enemy banks, they would be lucky to stand with figures very slightly better than those last recorded. The crossing evolves into a two-stage affair having the convenience of a mid-stream island and little opposition whilst setting up pontoons to bridge the first half, resting through the night and then going on to repeat the process for the second half. There is a check on the enemy side as they approach the village of Villefranque along waterlogged paths. It is here no doubt that Captain Edward Charlton at the head of the Light company is wounded along with Captain William Green but this day only four of the rank & file are injured" on 10 November 1813 at River Nivelle, Villefranque, France.10 
Milit-record9 December 1813 He won the "Gold medal Nive" at the skirmish at the Nive, was wounded. Cannon records: "Early in December (1813) a forward movement was ordered; and on the morning of the 9th of that month a beacon lighted on the heights above Cambo gave the signal for the attack, when the passage of the river Nive was forced, and the enemy driven back towards Bayonne. The sixth division passed the river on floating bridges. The advanced-guard (in which was the light company of the SIXTY-FIRST, formed in a light battalion under Captain Greene, of the regiment) evinced great gallantry, and surprised the first French piquet, which fled in dismay. Some sharp fighting occurred; Captain Greene was wounded, and Captain Charleton was sent from the regiment to take command of the light battalion. The swampy nature of the country retarded the advance of the division, and gave time for the French troops to effect their retreat towards Bayonne. The enemy advanced and attacked the British troops on the three following days, but were repulsed.
At the passage of the “Nive” the regiment earned another honorary inscription for its colours; and Captain Greene received a medal. Its loss was limited to Captains Greene and Charleton wounded, and a few private soldiers killed and wounded. " on 9 December 1813 at River Nive, France.11,10

Occupation Henry Couper de Castilla was City Surveyor (engineer) Perth City Council. Engineer in WA Government, first project was Toodyay railway. He was responsible for the bores supplying the trans-Australian railway across the desert. Discovered the Madura Pass while on this project.2

He served four years as an articled pupil to that gentleman, and was his assistant for two years after wards. His experience in Mr. Willett's office included a great deal of sanitary

The river steamer River Bird was brought out to China from America in 1854 for the Hong Kong and Canton Steam Packet Company established by Jardine Matheson and Co. The steamer Lamont was built by Messrs Robert Napier and Sons of Glasgow for Jardine Matheson and Co for the China and Japan trade. The Lamont was 1390 tons with 200 horse power and a speed of twelve knots an hour. She was later sold by Jardine Matheson and renamed Chihli.7

Anecdote28 June 1856 Fei Ma had been built for Lyall, Still & Company and was registered at Hong Kong as 10/1856 in the names of George Lyall and Charles Frederick Still (joins owners of forty-eight shares) and Henry Castilla (her master with sixteen shares). No further owners are shown in her document.

Another product of J. C. Cowper’s yard in 1856 was Fei Ma (Flying horse). 193 tons gross, launched 28 June 1856 for Lyall, Still and Co. as a running mate for Hong Kong, formally of the Hong Kong and Canton S. P. Co., on the Hong Kong-Canton route. Lyall, Still and Co. owned 48 of her 64 shares, the remaining 16 being held by Henry Castilla, her master (for 4 years; 1856 - 1859).12 
Anecdote6 January 1857 The following extract in the Hong Kong Register "An exodus is now going on from Hong Kong. The Fei-ma left this for Macao and Canton yesterday with some three hundred of our most respectable citizens, and as many more were refused conveyance." (Master not named, likely to have been Castilla.)13 
Anecdote24 February 1857 The news just over a week old (~24 February 1857); "The Fei-ma (Capt. Castilla), just arrived, tried to get up the Junk Passage to Canton, but finding 200 junks there, came back to Whampoa, and went up the Macao Passage, through which she had difficulty passed the half-a-dozen junks found sunk at the barrier. Nothing has been heard of Mr Cowper, sen."14 
Anecdote The Morning Chronicle, Thursday 5 March 1857, reports "On the evening before the faubourgs of Canton were set fire to (an operation which cost the English three killed and several wounded), a numerous squadron of war junks attacked the merchant steamer Fei-ma (Capt. Castilla), which was going down the river, but she escaped. The Chinese succeeded in lodging more than twenty heavy shots in her hull."15 
Anecdote2 March 1857 The London Standard reported on 2 March 1857 "...mentioned the intention of Captain Castilla to continue running the Fei-ma on the river, betwixt this and Canton; but on his last trip up he was so near taken by the Chinese, that he is not likely to run such a risk again."16

Anecdote4 April 1858 The Singapore Morning Post, Tuesday 1 June 1858, reported "American clipper Courser....was wrecked on Prata Shoals April 4. Captain and crew took to their boats, hoping to reach Hong Kong, but fell in with pirates, who attacked them. One of the boats capsized and two men drowned. However she was righted and reached Hong Kong. The other two boats were picked up by the Fei-ma steamer on her way to Macao." (Master not named, likely to have been Castilla.)18

Correspondence17 April 1867 He wrote at Glasgow, Scotland, on 17 April 1867 describing trial cruises of the new SS Lamont on 13 and 16 April, before leaving for China. He describes the trial "was upon the whole very satisfactory". The letter includes detail of coal consumption per hour and a time trial over sixteen statute miles in seventy one minutes.29

'If you should be able to give me further employment I need hardly say how (rest of letter missing).34' 
Correspondence14 August 1867 He wrote at Hong Kong, Hong Kong Colony, on 14 August 1867 provides a summary of the Lamont's passage leaving the Clyde on the 26th, stopping in Lisbon for repairs as the boiler had broken loose and pipework damaged. Continues encountering heavy weather for a few hours was in considerable danger off the Cape. A ship of this class was not built for seagoing and Henry comments that they left England two months too late for a ship of the Lamonts class. Had fair weather for the rest of the trip to China. Cape to Singapore 27 days never stopping the engine. A good stout craft suited for the China coastal and river trade.30

Sulyard Cary visited the grave on or about 3 March 1872 and wrote to his mother Eliza Cary; visited Henry Castilla's grave and wrote to his mother"I visited uncle Henry's grave, and I think it is very nice - The chunam work is broken in one place and weeds growing in this crack - I send a sprig of the plant which is growing in this. The grey granite is now put up & the inscription gilt."1,43,44
