Fears are entertained for the fate of an old man. named Robert Atkins, aged 60, a resident of Beach street. Queenscliff. Atkins, who is a marine store dealer, has been in the habit for years of coming up to Port Melbourne in his boat to dispose of his stores, and for this purpose he left Queenscliff on the 8th Inst. Yesterday morning, however, his boat was found by two fishermen, named Alfred Thwaites and Thomas Iken, anchored in Raglan Bay, near Pt. Leonards, but no trace of Atkins could be found. The boat was then taken to Swan Island wharf and made secure. Mr Arthur Hester, marine store dealer. Nott street. Port Melbourne, stated that Atkins called at his store on the 8th Inst., and sold some marine stores, for which he received L3 2s 11d. He was sober, and said he would call at Williamstown, and wait there for a fair wind to take him to Queenscliff. Atkins was subject to fits, and it is feared that he has fallen out of his boat while suffering from one of these."20 |
