Fears are entertained for the fate of an old man. named Robert Atkins, aged 60, a resident of Beach street. Queenscliff. Atkins, who is a marine store dealer, has been in the habit for years of coming up to Port Melbourne in his boat to dispose of his stores, and for this purpose he left Queenscliff on the 8th Inst. Yesterday morning, however, his boat was found by two fishermen, named Alfred Thwaites and Thomas Iken, anchored in Raglan Bay, near Pt. Leonards, but no trace of Atkins could be found. The boat was then taken to Swan Island wharf and made secure. Mr Arthur Hester, marine store dealer. Nott street. Port Melbourne, stated that Atkins called at his store on the 8th Inst., and sold some marine stores, for which he received L3 2s 11d. He was sober, and said he would call at Williamstown, and wait there for a fair wind to take him to Queenscliff. Atkins was subject to fits, and it is feared that he has fallen out of his boat while suffering from one of these."20 
Death*8 January 1901 He died on 8 January 1901 at St. Leonards, Queenscliff, Victoria, Australia, at age 60 He left Queenscliff in his boat and was never seen agan. His boat was found anchored at Raglan Bay on 14th January. Fears were entertained for his safety, as he was subject to fits. (Police Gazette Victoria, 24 January 1901 missing at sea).21

Hall Russell & Co., Engineers and Iron Shipbuilders, was founded in 1864. The firm was a partnership between James and William Hall, sons of Alexander; Thomas Russell, a Glasgow engineer, and John Cardno Couper of Sussex. Initially the company built engines and boilers but in 1868 produced its first ship, the iron steamer Kwang Tung.4 
Residence* John Cardno Couper lived at Craigiebuckler House, Aberdeen, Scotland, He purchased the estate on his return from China. He also bought Burnieboozle, Craigiebuckler, Slopefield and Viewfield.

Craigiebuckler today is the location of the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute. The original house forms part of the main building and is easily distinguishable. The Couper family was probably responsible for laying out the grounds as they remain to this day, including the planting of exotic conifers. A pagoda and boat house on the lake (now fallen into disrepair and removed for safety reasons) clearly depicted the Chinese influence favoured by John Couper.1,5
