Anecdote* | 20 December 1856 | Articles in a number of British newspapers probably originating from the China Mail and Hong Kong Register reported that on the evening of the 20th December Mr Cowper sen (William Couper), father of Mr Cowper (John Cardno Couper) shipbuilder of Whampoa was kidnapped by a party of Chinese. While walking with his wife on the deck of his houseboat (called a chop) he was pulled into a sampan and taken up river. He was never seen or heard of again. Various reports ensued alleging that he may have been held in Canton for ransom although this was denied by a Chinese Hong Merchant and no evidence has come to light to substantiate this.5,6 |
